“In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God…Through him all things were made…In him was life, and that life was the light of all mankind. And the Word became flesh and made his dwelling among us.” John 1:1-4, 14
The Word – logos (logic, reason, meaning, and study)
Read this together with Proverbs 8:22, “The Lord possessed me (wisdom) at the beginning of his work…before the beginning of the earth.” And John 8:12, “I am the light of the world.” Apart from Jesus we live in darkness unable to understand who we are. In Jesus we find wisdom, meaning and purpose!
This week we start Ruth and John.
Book of Ruth – author unknown. Believed to have written 1000 BC. An amazing story about how God uses ordinary people to accomplish his purpose and how he redeems suffering to preserve his people. Ruth is not an Israelite, but a Moabite. She is the grandmother of David and is mentioned in Matthew as one of 5 women in the genealogy of Jesus.
Book of John – written by the disciple Jesus loved approximately 90 AD – years after the martyrdom of James (brother of John), Peter and Paul. Written to lead people to believe that Jesus is the Son of God. John is also the author of the 3 Books of John and Revelations. It is believed that John is the only disciple to die of natural causes.
